Thank you all for your input into the Fall/Winter Schedule and for restaurants for our Mama's Meal on the 29th. Here are the results:

• Our Mama's Meal will be held at 7:00 PM on August 29th at The Porcupine (at the base of Big Cottonwood Canyon). RSVP's will be coming soon!
• We will have class three times during the week, and on the 1st and 3rd Saturdays of the month September-November.
• All classes will start at 9:15 AM starting on September 1st.
• Our Friday classes will be at Draper City Park - all other remaining parks and days will be determined on Sunday, August 23rd once our last set of votes have been cast.
• Please be specific on what days and parks you would like to have class on our last class poll of the year on the right-hand side.

Ch-Ch-Ch-Changes

Outside it's a blistering 95 degrees. Kids are riding their bikes and running through the sprinklers. All signs of summer are a go. Yet the winds of change are in the air. Shorts and swimsuits are on sell-out clearance and it's time to unpack the jeans and jackets for cooler autumn evenings. School starts in less than two weeks and soon outerwear will replace our flip-flops.

I for one am excited for the fall. It's my favorite time of the year. I don't think there's anything like the feeling of walking across a college campus in the fall and all the unhinged anxiety and anticipation in the air. I love the smells, colors, and sounds the season brings. I believe it represents new beginnings and a return to routine and traditions all in the same breath. I'm patient, though. I'll be soaking up the last rays of sun and splashing in the outdoor pools till September. But deep down inside - I'm kinda excited to throw on a hoodie and crunch my way around the block with my little guy.

Therefore, we at Fit4Mamas are embracing the changes and thinking about the upcoming months. Starting Labor Day through Halloween, we'll be shakin' it up and changing our schedule to fit the needs of our Mamas. In November, we'll be moving inside for our indoor-based classes. We'll be having class when and where our families will go. So please vote on our newest and greatest polls on the right-hand side and have your voice heard!

P.S. Also - we gals are getting our "Kitchen Pass" on August 29th for a Mamas-Only Meal at 7:00 pm. Vote on where we should grab some grub!

Chinese Zodiac Signs

So back when I was in grad school, I went to a cooking class with a group where the theme was "Chinese New Year." It's unrelated on how I ended up in a cooking class on a Friday night in January 2006, but it was a nice break. Anyways, we all got some party favors a-la Chinese New Year - and one of the gifts were poorly-photocopied papers rolled around a pair of chopsticks. I found out I was expecting my son a few weeks later, and have been carting around these wrinkled, barely readable pieces of information ever since. I transcribed them word-for-word, cringing at the sentence structure and grammar, but I kept the authenticity! We've talked about it in class a few times, so I thought I would post them for your enjoyment and dinner conversation!

Rat: Born in 1912, 1924, 1936, 1948, 1960, 1972, 1984, 1996, 2008, 2020, 2032, 2044

The Rat was the first animal in the Chinese zodiac cycle. It is usually considered aggressive, ambitious, suspicious, power hungry, honest, generous, quick to anger, and prone to spend freely. Those born under this sign of Rat are imaginative, charming, and truly generous to the ones they love. However, they have a tendency to be hot-tempered and overly critical. They are usually suitable in sales or as a writer, critic, or publicist. Rats will get along well with Dragons and Monkeys, however avoid Horses.

Ox: Born in 1913, 1925, 1937, 1949, 1961, 1973, 1985, 1997, 2009, 2021, 2033, 2045

Ox is a symbol of powerful individuals with unyielding and stubborn personalities. Those born under the sign are natural born leaders who typically succeed when given a chance and will also make outstanding parents. They are upright, inspiring, easy-going, and conservative. Democracy at its finest

As the warm summer air blows in Memorial Day weekend - outdoor pools open, sunscreen sales increase, and we start melting in class while search for shade. Therefore, we have a few new polls. Please let us know what time you would like to see classes starting June 15th, and whether we should tweak the schedule to include more Draper or Sugarhouse action or more overall parks. We've had some grumblings about exercising at multiple parks - like switching between Sugarhouse/Murray on Mondays, Flat Iron Mesa/Falcon on Wednesdays, and Draper City/Jordan River Rotary on Fridays (just as an example - we would have more discussion about specific parks on specific days). If you want to move around to more parks - cast your votes!

We're pretty sure Congress is going to call us any moment now and ask us to show them how democracy is supposed to work. So make your voice known before May 30th at 5:00 PM and we'll share the results soon after!!

A Lifetime Horoscope?

So I was flipping through our local paper, The Salt Lake Tribune, this morning while having a few moments of quiet in the restroom. Alright, I'm kidding - the restroom was filled with both my 2.5 year old trying to brush his teeth/eardrums with Thomas the Train toothpaste and a 100-pound Labrador hoping to get her incisors scrubbed by a toddler. Amongst the craziness, I came across an article about how more kids nationally are born on Wednesday and here in the lovely state of Utah we birth more on Tuesdays. What I found to be more interesting than the straight statistics was what astrologers believe each day of the week means. Here's the breakdown courtesy of The Tribune and Salt Lake Astrologer Anne Windsor:

Monday: The moon, associated with being sensitive to his or her environment and needs of others.
Tuesday: Mars, associated with being very active, a self starter, and having the tendency to be a little confrontational.
Wednesday: Mercury, associated with needing a lot of activity, being curious, and restless.
Thursday: Jupiter, associated with being outgoing, having a focus on the future, and being optimistic but prone to delivering or taking on too much.
Friday: Venus, associated with liking to have things pleasant, enjoying good food, being possessive of things, but a little lazy and indulgent.
Saturday: Saturn, more responsible, focused on long-term accomplishments, and can be more somber.
Sunday: The sun, which means they want to be the center of attention, are very creative, warm, and generous.

I could buy this breakdown as my little terror was born smack-dab in the middle of a Tuesday, and was destroying the house as I was contemplating this article. When I thought more about it, I could see some flaws. I was born a few minutes into a Monday - and I don't see myself as a card-carrying member of the Sierra Club, but I do get pretty sensitive with interpersonal relationships. I dunno, I think some more investigation will have to take place before I'm sold on the "day of the week" horoscope.

A Mama's Meal

After surviving another winter season trying to keep babes entertained indoors, we deserve a break. It's time we're able to complete a sentence and possibly even a complete conversation (gasp - really?) without having to run away to save a toddler from overdosing on crayons and wood chips. It might be hard at first to get our minds to focus only on feeding ourselves and communicating with rational beings, but it's worth a try.

We're grabbing some grub on the evening of April 24th with just the Fit4Mamas ladies (not to be confused with Beyonce and all her "Single Ladies"). Please vote on the right-hand side to what cuisine you'd like to partake in that night. Polls close April 16th - so vote soon!

The Spring/Summer Schedule Poll...

Please vote on your top three outdoor schedules for when we move outside April 6th! We will be going to a Monday-Wednesday-Friday schedule with a family class the first Saturday of each month starting the week of March 9th.

What's with not having Sugarhouse as every option as before?

I was approached by some moms who wanted to see if we could meet at other locations rather than Sugarhouse on Fridays, and so to please the masses - I added some options to the polls. We'll see what the majority says - so make sure to make your voice heard!!

With the slight feeling of Spring in the air, we are thinking about what to do and where to go when we actually can exercise outside. I know, I just had heart palpitations just thinking about it. Also, many moms have mentioned their excitement behind having a Friday class, possibly in addition or replacement of Thursday's class (even before we move outside).

Therefore, since we are all opinionated ladies, we have created some polls to survey the Fit4Mamas public. Please answer the polls on the right-hand side with your preferences - and we will arrange the schedule accordingly. We're hoping to add more classes in the Spring, so please mark all the days and locations that would fit into your schedule. And yes, we are already planning to have Friday classes at Sugarhouse Park (and calling it the "Sugarshack Attack!!"), so that is why it's the only Friday option. Mama Motivation

In the past year I’ve been thinking about what motivates Moms. While being a corporate gal for the majority of my adult life, I was motivated by business trips to exotic locations (like Boise and Tempe), dress down Fridays, and morning meetings that included chocolate milk in addition to the standard donuts and OJ. I especially enjoyed it when my boss would get us string cheese and Pirate Booty to munch on during grueling ten hour workdays.

Nowadays, I’m the walking snack-pack. My bag is overflowing with fruit snacks and Froot Loops, and is growing Goldfish crackers like a mobile Chia-Pet. My current manager is half my size, 28 years my junior, and works me much longer than the FLSA ever wanted when establishing the 40-hour-work-week. I’m his meal ticket, personal shopper, and translator of his special dialect. I’m in desperate need of some solitude and a strong drink, none of which are coming my way. I asked my son for a few days off, and he chuckled and demanded I sing “Mary Had a Little Lamb” one more time.

So why do we do it? What drives us to endure the feedings, teething, and temper tantrums? Sure, you get to wake up to sweet, innocent faces and all the “blessings in heaven” jazz. But motherhood’s a hard gig, and yet we keep on keepin’ on. There’s no sticker charts or merit badges for our future, just the simple satisfaction that our efforts result in a happy, well-balanced humans.

I believe that as cliché as it sounds, the payoff lies in the little things. For me, I love when my son spontaneously counts things, sings the ABC’s, or asks to listen to his favorite musicians: Savage Garden and Sade. Truth be known, we’re each other’s favorite companion and wouldn’t spend our days any other way than together. All in all, I believe the work is worth it. Spending my days (and nights) as a mom is worth more than all the chocolate milk and exotic business trips in the world. And solitude or chaos, I wouldn’t have it any other way.
